Rules and categories
Rules and categories
As we do not have an athletics track in Villanders, the track races are held on an asphalt road next to the soccer pitch. The 100m track is slightly uphill for the first 40m and has two slight bends with an identical radius. This means that both tracks are exactly the same length. Timing is done with light barriers, IUF start-beep device and early start detection.
100m
Wheel sizes depending on the categories:
- Standard category: maximum 20 inches with crank 100mm or longer
- Expert category: maximum 24 inches with crank 125mm or longer
- Pedals: Fixed connections between shoes and pedals (e.g. clipless pedals) are not permitted. Pins (including metal pins) are permitted
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes, gloves and knee pads. Helmet is recommended
- Start with starting device and early start recognition
- False starts: 1 false start per participant is permitted
- Finish line must be crossed with both feet on the pedals
- Riding on the marking lines is permitted. However, not beyond this
- Falling or descending means disqualification
- Obstructed riders (e.g. due to the rider falling on the parallel track) may start again
Trial Kids
- Very easy for the little ones/beginners
- No regulations regarding unicycles
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes and helmet. Also recommended: Gloves
- A time limit is specified (approx. 30 minutes but will be set on short term before the start)
- Contact of the body with the ground, the obstacle or solid fencing that affects balance is not permitted.
- Hopping is allowed
- The obstacle must be completed in a controlled manner, i.e. the rider must be able to remain on the unicycle without assistance for at least 3 seconds after the obstacle
- Dismounting between obstacles is permitted
- One point is awarded for each obstacle completed
- The obstacles can be completed in any order
- You can skip obstacles
- Obstacles that are not completed can be repeated as often as desired. If more than one participant is in line for an obstacle, there will be a fair alternation between the individual attempts
- Scoring is primarily based on points; in the event of a tie, the rider which exits the race earlier wins.
Trial
- No regulations regarding unicycles
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes and helmet. Additionally recommended: Gloves
- A time limit is specified (approx. 60 min. but will be set on short term before the start)
- Contact of the body with the ground, the obstacle or solid fencing that affects balance is not permitted. Contact between the rider's heel and/or toes and the ground is only permitted during the pedal grab (when touching down on an obstacle with a pedal). However, the main weight must always be on the pedal.
- The obstacle must be completed in a controlled manner, i.e. the rider must be able to remain on the unicycle without assistance for at least 3 seconds after the obstacle
- Dismounting between obstacles is permitted
- Points are awarded for each obstacle completed
- The obstacles can be overcome in any order
- You can skip obstacles
- Obstacles that are not completed can be repeated as often as desired. If more than one participant is in line for an obstacle, there will be a fair change at the individual attempts
- Scoring is primarily based on points; in the event of a tie, the rider which exits the race earlier wins.
Uphill
- No regulations regarding unicycles
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes, helmet, gloves, knee pads
- Everything must be ridden, you are not allowed to walk forward, not a single step!
- In the event of a descent, you must remount at the same point (point of the wheel at the moment of the fall/descent), or further back towards the start line if the ascent point is too steep. But never further forward.
- Course marshals check the ascent point after a descent and give instructions if necessary
- The finish line must be crossed with both feet on the pedals. In the event of a fall directly over the finish line, you must go back, remount and ride or jump correctly over the finish line.
- Failure to follow the instructions of the marshals will result in disqualification
- You are allowed to stick to fences, trees, walls etc., but not to marshals or spectators.
- Course: Length approx. 350 m. Very steep irregular concrete path!
- Timekeeping with light barrier at the start and finish
- Individual start: approx. 30 second intervals
Cross Country
- Geared unicycles are not permitted. Otherwise no regulations regarding unicycles.
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes, helmet, gloves, knee pads.
- The unicycle may be pushed on unrideable sections. You may also walk fast, but not run.
- While walking a rider may overtake other walking participants, but under no circumstances may they overtake riding participants
- Dismounted participants may not obstruct riding participants under any circumstances
- The finish line can be crossed by walking or riding. The following applies: anyone who crosses the finish line walking or has a fall at the finish line will receive a 10-second penalty. It is permitted to go back again, climb up and cross the finish line while riding. In this case, the second triggering of the light barrier counts without applying the time penalty.
- Two different routes
- Standard: Length approx. 1km. A course for beginners. Can also be ridden with unicycles without brakes
- Expert: Length approx. 8 km
- Timekeeping with light barrier at the finish
- Start category Standard: Single start approx. every 30 seconds
- Start category Expert: Mass start.
Downhill
- No regulations regarding unicycles
- Mandatory protective clothing: Sturdy shoes, helmet, gloves, knee pads
- On unrideable sections, the unicycle may only be pushed slowly at walking pace. It must be ensured that riders of the same level are faster when riding the passage than walkers
- After a fall, the rider must come to a standstill as quickly as possible and may only get back on after coming to a complete standstill
- Participants who have dismounted may under no circumstances obstruct participants who are riding
- The finish line can be crossed by walking or riding. The following applies: anyone who crosses the finish line walking or has a fall on the finish line will receive a 10-second penalty. It is permitted to go back again, climb up and cross the finish line while riding. In this case, the second triggering of the light barrier counts without applying the time penalty.
- Three different routes:
- Standard: Lenght approx. 1km. A track for beginners. It can be ridden with unicycles which do not have a break mounted
- Expert: The expert course is divided into the upper, easier part for qualification (length 1.81km), and the lower, more difficult part for the final (length 660 m; descent 193m). 50% of the participants can qualify for the final, with a minimum number of 10 men and 8 women. The previous year's winners automatically qualify for the final. The qualifying run is awarded on the basis of age groups. The final race is awarded without consideration of age groups, separately for women and men only. The best time medal of the day is awarded to the winner of the final run which may be different than the winner of the qualification.
- Timekeeping with light barrier at the start and finish
- Individual start: Suggested start interval:
- Standard: approx. 60 seconds (to be determined at the start)
- Expert: approx. 60 seconds (to be determined at the start)
This applies to every race:
- Start number must be clearly visible on the chest
- Anyone who does not arrive at the start on time will be disqualified for the respective discipline!
- For everything not mentioned in these rules and instructions, the currently valid IUF Rulebook applies.
Awards
Prizes are awarded to the first three in each age group, category and discipline.
In addition, prizes will be awarded for the best times of the day, but only in the Expert categories and without taking age groups into account.
Depending on their skill level, each participant can decide for themselves whether to take part in Expert or Standard, regardless of age.

The following age categories are available:
- 0-10 (born 2014 and younger)
- 11-14 (born between 2010 and 2013)
- 15-29 (born between 1995 and 2009)
